Police are still searching for a pit bull that attacked a man and bit off a piece of his nose last Saturday.

The 52-year-old Newport man was walking back from Ben’s Chili Dogs and had hot dogs in his hands when a pit bull attacked him, according to the police report. The attack occurred on Wheatland Boulevard.

He described the dog as a “large brindle colored pit bull” weighing between 60 to 80 pounds. He said the dog suddenly appeared and he could tell it wanted his food.

Before he could react, the dog lunged at him, bit him in the face and took the food. A tip of his nose was bitten off during the attack.

The Newport Fire Department also responded to the incident and treated him. The man was bleeding profusely and he was transported to the emergency room.

Police were approached by a man on Kingston Avenue who said he had found the tip of the man’s nose. It was transported to the hospital where the man was receiving specialized treatment for his nose.

There were no witnesses to the attack or suspected owners, reports said.

Surrounding residents and businesses were advised of the attack and were asked to report any loose pit bulls to the Newport Police Department.
