Woonsocket City Council is proposing an ordinance to limit the number of pit pulls in the city.
The measure comes in the wake of a pit bull attack on Sayles Street last month that sent three people to a hospital.
The City Council said the police department wants to keep pit bulls out of the city to make it safer.
If the ban is approved, residents wouldn’t be able to bring any new pit bulls into Woonsocket.
People who already own pit bulls would be grandfathered in, but they’d have to take out a $100,000 insurance policy. They would also have to keep their dogs muzzled in public.
If a pit bull gives birth, its owner would have to remove the puppies from the city or surrender them to animal control to be put down.
Experts said the hysteria over pit bulls is a bit unfair.
Pawtucket has a pit bull ban in place. Woonsocket officials plan to meet with Pawtucket Animal Control to learn how the ordinance is working in that city.
There’s no vote scheduled yet.
