Pit bull attacks cop – Cop serving warrant shoots pit bull on pit bull awareness day

NEW HAVEN — A police officer shot and wounded a pit bull that attacked him while he and his partner attempted to serve a domestic violence warrant on Lyon Street.
The incident happened Wednesday night. According to Lt. Jeff Hoffman, two officers went to the address at 6 Lyon St. trying to serve warrants charging domestic violence and failure to appear in court. In the rear, an occupant of the house opened the door and a pit bull charged past one officer and at another baring its teeth, police said The officer drew his weapon and fired at least one shot.
The dog ran off but police later located the animal, which was wounded in the paw, and returned it to its owner. The officer, Curtis Miller, was not seriously injured.
The target of the warrant wasn’t home.
Teenager killed in house fire
ENFIELD (AP) — A 13-year-old girl has died in a house fire in Enfield despite efforts to rescue her from the intense flames.
Shaker Pines Fire Department Chief Charlie Macsata said the body of Hope Hart-Hartnett was found in her bedroom. Her mother, Grace Hart, and the mother’s boyfriend managed to escape the fast-moving Wednesday night fire.
The girl’s father, Michael Hart, who was visiting his father’s house nearby and saw the flames, tried along with neighbors to rescue her. Hart told The Hartford Courant his daughter was “the most important thing in my life.”
Firefighters were pushed back by heat and heavy smoke. Three firefighters were injured when a deck collapsed. They were treated at Baystate Medical center in Springfield, Mass., and released.
Authorities said the fire doesn’t appear to be suspicious.
