KELOWNA, B.C. – A B.C. provincial court judge has ordered the destruction of a 16-month-old pitbull after what she said was a “savage and persistent” attack on one of its owners.
A Kelowna court heard the male dog named Loki had a long history of running loose and being aggressive when he bit Jennifer Heitzmann on her arms and legs and broke a bone in her hand last November.
During a three-day trial in Kelowna, Heitzmann told the court her partner Rick Bellar was being attacked by two men and she tried to hold the dog back.
But in a ruling issued this week, Judge Jane Cartwright rejected that explanation, saying evidence showed the attack happened while the couple was having an argument.
She described the wounds as “deep, bloody and gruesome” and said there is “no other option” than to have the dog destroyed in 30 days if the owners don’t appeal the order — which Bellar said he plans to do.
Cartwright also banned the couple from owning or residing with any dog that has been declared aggressive or dangerous by an animal control officer for three years.
“It would be irresponsible in the extreme to release Loki to anyone, much less the respondents, as they have proven that they are unable to control Loki,” she said. (Global)

A police officer was forced to shoot and kill a pit bull Thursday after being bitten by the animal, according to Santa Fe police.
Police responded to Santa Fe Storage in the 13700 Block of FM 1764 after receiving a report about dogs being kept in one of the storage units.
Upon arrival, the responding officer met with the caller who advised they could hear dogs in one of the units close to theirs. The officer approached the unit, which was left unlocked, and discovered several pit bull dogs inside, along with their owner. The woman was living in the storage unit with the dogs, police say.
As the officer was making contact with owner, one of the pit bulls attacked the officer’s left forearm. The officer then shot the dog, killing it.
Santa Fe EMS transported the officer to Clearlake Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The owner told police the dog had recently been quarantined for biting another person. Police verified that the dog had been quarantined in February.
Santa Fe Police, along with Galveston County Animal Control, removed an additional adult pit bull and seven pit bull puppies from the storage unit.
The dogs’ owner was taken into custody for outstanding warrants, but was first transported to UTMB Medical Center for a medical condition
FUCK BSL, and FUCK all of your for being so IGNORANT to believe any of this. Pitbull or like dogs do NOT have the more attacks, but labs, german shephards and small dogs do. And to sit here and say you HAVE to muzzle your dog in public by its breed but not ALL breeds. Is wrong. You should ALWAYS ask before you pet some ones dog, and you wont get bit. But to allow a law to destroy one breed of dog is ignorant. When you should blame the beast holding the leash. Dogs are like anything else and will learn from their owners. You mistreat the dog or show it anger thats all it will know. You show it love and thats all it knows. To blame a good dog is wrong when you should blame the owner. Like every person every dog has their days. And if one day you get bit by a dog or your dog bites someone ONCE do you really think they need be put down? Because I don’t when I approach a dog I anazlye their behavior first and their body language. If i KNOW they are disturbed and i get bit or if i EVER get bit. I would blame myself, because some where I, MYSELF, went wrong. They always tell you some how they don’t want to be approached or want you near them. And to blame the dog is wrong. EVERYONE deserves a second chance just because a dog grows up in a bad place doesn’t mean it can’t learn to love. I have seen it. So for anyone who supports BSL learn the REAL facts, just because maybe you hate that breed doesn’t mean that their family hates them. You wouldn’t want your loved dog to be taken just because of its breed.
