Wilmette residents sue neighbors who own pit bull

Wilmette resident John Grady said he likes his neighbors, but their daughter’s pit bull has residents on the block fearing for their lives. The dog has escaped on three occasions, each time showing aggressive, vicious behavior, he said.

Now, Grady and his wife, Jennifer, along with three other Wilmette families, are suing the pit bull’s owner and her parents in Cook County Circuit Court. They say the dog shouldn’t live in the 2000 block of Beachwood Avenue, a street where at least 40 children also reside.

“We did it with a heavy heart because we regard lawsuits with neighbors as things to be avoided if at all possible,” said Grady, 42, who has two children. “There just came a time when we had to act to protect our children.”

The four families said that sometime before October 2011, Megan Albright moved back into her parents’ home with her two dogs, a pit bull and a Doberman pinscher.

That month, the pit bull, which is a rescue dog, allegedly attempted to attack a young child playing in a nearby yard, according to the lawsuit filed Friday. The suit states that neither Albright nor her parents were present during the incident. The family declined to comment Monday night.

Shortly after, Albright’s father apologized to the child’s parent, saying the pit bull is “mean” and “I can’t understand why (Albright) keeps it,” according to the lawsuit.

The pit bull, along with the Doberman, escaped again in November 2011, attempting to hunt neighborhood dogs, according to the lawsuit. Then in September 2012, the pit bull stopped within six feet of Grady and his dog, growling and assuming an attack position, the lawsuit states.

Albright allegedly said the pit bull couldn’t go to a kennel because it attacks the other animals, but she eventually agreed to remove the dog from the home, according to the lawsuit.

Grady said that has yet to happen, despite his and others’ attempts to persuade the family to get rid of the dog.

“This is a very sad situation. I really like my neighbors,” Grady said. But “we are not waiting for the first bite, which could mean tragedy for a child.”

Grandma got eaten by a pit bull

Authorities are searching for a dog that attacked a 70-year-old grandmother in the Bronx.

The dog’s owner Sammy Smith said he believed the pitbull named Tony snapped and bit his grandmother in the face, while she was feeding Tony’s three puppies inside the Baychester home they share with five pitbulls in total.

Smith said he rushed to his grandmother’s aid and pulled the dog off of her, but that the damage had already been done. Smith was also bit by the dog on the leg and finger.

He said in the four years the family has owned the pitbulls this was a first.

“I’m surprised, she usually plays with the dogs,” Smith said. “I dont know what happened this morning.”

Sabrina Santiago, a neighbor, said she heard the woman screaming.

“People were coming down the stairs to help her, we see them bring out so much blood,” Santiago said.

Now Tony is on the loose after running away in all the commotion.

Smith said his grandmother is in surgery at Jacobi Hospital and is expected to be okay. Sadly, he said, once his dog is found he will likely have to put it down.
