Grandmother of 13 mauled to death by pet pit bull while babysitting three of her young grandkids who witnessed bloody attack

A 65-year-old South Carolina woman was mauled to death by the family pit bull in a gruesome attack that unfolded as she babysat her three young grandchildren Tuesday.

Officials were called to a home in Hodges, where Betty Ann Chapman Todd was looking after her grandkids, after receiving reports of an animal bite.

When they arrived at the scene on East Grumling Road, they were faced with a black-and-white pit bull with blood on its mouth, chest and paws. The animal was acting aggressively and blocked the officers’ entry into the house.

By that time, Todd’s son Andrew and his wife returned home and were able to get the pet under control. They entered one of the rooms, only to discover the lifeless body of the 65-year-old Todd.

The woman was looking after Andrew Chapman Todd’s three children between the ages of one and 12 while the couple went out to dinner, the station WYFF reported.

According to the victim’s brother-in-law, David Todd, the eldest grandchild was in another room at around 8pm when the family pit bull lunged at the grandmother.

When the girl discovered the dog mauling Betty Todd, she attempted to stop the animal, but could not do it, so she gathered her younger siblings and took them to another room before calling her father for help.

Andrew Todd contacted a neighbor, and the three children sought refuge at a nearby house until police arrived.

According to the coroner’s report, Betty Todd died from severe neck and spinal injuries in addition to suffering puncture wounds to the head and face

David Todd said the horrific attack came as a shock because the pit ball has never shown any signs of aggression in the past.

‘It slept in the bed with them,’ the brother-in-law said, referring to the children. ‘They’ve had the dog four years, and it never ever showed anything like this.’

The victim’s son told officials that his mother stayed at his house before and got along with the family pet.

An animal control officer was called to the blood-spattered home and secured the dog inside a cage before hauling it to a shelter, GwdToday.com reported.

Angy Hall, of the Greenwood Human Society, said the dog was very submissive Wednesday, but because of the fatal incident, it had to be put down.
Hall speculated that given its history, the dog was likely just being protective of the children.

Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office said no charges will be filed in the case, which has been ruled a tragic accident.

According to her online obituary, Betty Todd, a retired librarian, leaves behind three grownup children, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pit bull owner arraigned following attack on girl

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – A woman faced a judge in a Chula Vista courtroom Thursday two days after her pit bull allegedly mauled a 4-year-old girl.

Brittany Morgan Gardiner, 22, was arraigned on one count of having a dangerous dog that caused great bodily injury. It’s a felony charge with a maximum sentence of three years.

Investigators said Hailey Nunez suffered serious injuries to her face and upper body after the dog she was trying to pet attacked her. The child was taken from the Laurel Avenue apartment complex in National City to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego where she underwent surgery, her mother said.

“We are so sorry for what happened to poor Haley,” said Sarah Gardiner, defendant’s cousin. “She knew the dog and she pet the dog more than once and it’s a shock to all of us.”

“We understand the emotional scarring this child is going to have to endure for the rest of her life,” said Maria Gardiner, defendant’s mother. “But my daughter as well is going to have to endure. She has to face the family and the child for something that her dog did, that she’s going to be punished for.”

Deputy District Attorney Mary Loeb Gardiner might be a flight risk and asked for her bail to remain at $25,000.

“After this attack happened,” said Loeb. “This four year old girl is sitting there with her face torn up, bleeding everywhere and the defendant grabbed her dog, went to her apartment gathered her belongings and went to her car. When the cops got there she was trying to drive away. They stopped her from doing so, but when they did, she admitted that she was headed to Tijuana.”

The judge said she will consider a supervised release during a bail review next Monday.

“She’s a 22-year-old kid who is trying to get her life in order and has never been in trouble with the law,” said Maria Gardiner. “She completely panicked under pressure. Anybody who knows her or has been in contact with my daughter, knows that she has a big heart.”

Gardiner’s family members said they have talked to the victim’s family and sent their “deepest concerns.”

Yesterday little Darleen was rushed to the hospital, leaving the 4-year-old traumatized and afraid of dogs after watching a pit bull attack her grandmother then turning around and biting her in the leg.

The day started off as a daily stroll to a raspa stand but ended, in a terrifying nightmare for this family.
The walk down east 27th street is one… little 4-year-old Darleen will not forget.

“The dog was aggressive he was coming to bite us,” said Blanca Varela

The dog tried attacking the grandmother, her motherly instincts kicked in as she tried to scare the dog away, the dog then went for Darleen and biting her in the back of her little leg. Varela said she gives thanks to god a neighbor came to help.

“He grabbed a baseball bat and hit the dog if it wasn’t for that, the bite would have been worse,” said Blanca Varela

It’s not the first time this pit bull has attacked someone, according to a family member of the victim.
The dog ran toward other kids and bit a woman. Neighbors say there’s a big problem with loose dogs in the neighborhood.

Oralia Martinez doesn’t think the dog should be put down, but blames the pet owner for the attack.

“If he loves the dog he should put more protection like a fence,” said Oralia Martinez

Darleen was taken to a hospital and is now back in pre-k. The pit bull was picked up that day by the health department and is now at the Palm Valley Animal Center where he will remain in quarantine for 10 days. The pet owner can receive a fine of up to $150.00 if the dog is not current on its vaccinations.

Detroit police said a 3-week-old girl was killed by a pit bull this afternoon on Detroit’s west side.

Sgt. Eren Stephens said the girl’s mother went to a home in 7700 block of Stahelin this afternoon and took the infant inside with her in some type of car seat.

The mother put the girl, who was still strapped into the seat, on the floor. Stephens said the mother had no idea there was a dog in the home.

The mother, Stephens said, stepped away from the infant for a moment, but when she returned the pit bull was mauling the girl.

Police would not release the name of the girl or her mother. Officers are still at the scene.
